The 2011 Caesars Cup is set to be one of the most interesting and exciting Caesars Cups in recent history. The two teams were selected by their captains, with Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier being the captain of Team Europe, and Phil Hellmuth is the captain of Team Americas. These two teams are comprised of five players a piece including the captains who play as well. The Cup will be played with No Limit Hold’em, and there are going to be multiple different partner and heads up events. The idea behind the Caesars Cup is that there are points that are given out for each specific victory. Some of the cool aspects of the Cup that will be used are alternating betting between players, and many other off the wall types of styles.

The event is similar to the Ryder cup, and the layout of the event will be a best of five series; which means that the first team to win three points will then be the overall winners. The Caesars Cup is a part of the World Series of Poker Europe, which features some of the biggest names in poker, and also some massive prize pools as well. This event will kick off on Wednesday, October 19th. The 2011 WSOPE will be held in Cannes, France, and will be played at the Casino Barriere de Cannes Croisette, and also at the Hotel Majestic Barriere. The Caesars Cup was actually not played last year, and the last year that it was a part of the WSOPE was in 2009 when Team Europe knocked off Team America. That year, Team Europe was captained by Annette Obrestad, and also had ElkY, Gus Hansen, and Dario Minieri; and Team America was led by Daniel Negreanu, and had Doyle Brunson, Phil Ivey, and Phil Hellmuth as well.

This year’s event has some interesting rosters, as Team Europe decided to go younger, with an average age of only 27 years old; while Team Americas has an average age of 51 years old. Team Europe in total has won five WSOP bracelets, and the Americas team has won an impressive 39 WSOP bracelets, and also has the top three gold bracelet winners of all-time as well. This will make up an interesting match-up of what most would consider “old school” poker against the new more aggressive poker of the younger generation.

*Team Europe consists of the following players:*

Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier (Captain)- France Gus Hansen- Denmark Jake Cody- United Kingdom Dario Minieri- Italy Maxim Lykov- Russia

*Team Americas will consist of the following players:*

Phil Hellmuth (Captain)- USA Doyle Brunson– USA Johnny Chan Daniel Negreanu- Canada Huck Seed- USA

As you can see from the lists above, both teams will return three players from the 2009 Caesars Cup. While all of the players stick out in their own way, one player that stands out for this type of event is Jake Cody from Team Europe. Many of the events are heads up matches, which will be excellent for a player like Cody who is fresh off of the 2011 WSOP $25k heads up event. As ElkY said, it made Cody an “easy pick”.
