  • Ben Lamb Pulls Off Double Feat In 2011

Wednesday, December 28th, 2011 by Ryan

This year was one of the more interesting in terms of poker for many reasons, but the starting point was of course back in April when Black Friday hit the United States, and left many players nowhere to go to play the game they love. All of the news wasn’t bad this year of course though, and one bit of news that stood out above the rest pretty consistently was the incredibly strong play of Ben Lamb through the World Series of Poker and beyond. Lamb was the best player of the year, and he recently got two awards to prove that true. These two awards are the World Series of Poker Player of the Year Award, and also the Card Player Magazine Player of the Year Award. What makes this so incredibly impressive for Lamb is the fact that he is now only the second player in history to pull off the feat of landing both awards in the same year.

Winning both of these awards is so tough for a few obvious reasons, but also for the fact that the winner of the WSOP player of the year gets his or her award for their strong play throughout the 55+ World Series Events, and also the World Series of Poker Europe Events only. What also makes this impressive for Lamb specifically, is the fact that all of his tournament cashes of the year, came throughout a three week span at the World Series, but the cashes were so impressive that they actually were enough to win him both awards.

Lamb’s hot streak at the WSOP started on the 17th of June with a 2nd place finish worth $259,918 in the $3k Pot Limit Omaha Event. He followed that up with back to back $10k tournament deep runs, by winning the PLO Championship for $814,436, and finishing in 12th in the Six Handed No Limit Hold’em event for $56,140. And then in July he had two more huge cashes with the $50k Poker Players Championship 8 Game Mix, in which he finished in 8th place taking home $201,338, and the Main Event, where he finished in 3rd place to cash for just over $4 million for his incredible run.

All of those cashes above were enough to beat out players who had gone all around the world in order to pull in results.

The only other player to take down both awards in history is well-known pro Daniel Negreanu, who did this back in 2004. Past winners of the Card Player Magazine Award include Men Nguyen (four times), TJ Cloutier (two times), David Pham (two times), Tony Ma, Negreanu, Michael Mizrachi, John Phan, Eric Baldwin, and Tom Marchese. Lamb’s incredible run at the World Series of Poker is widely considered to be one of the most impressive in history, and it’s interesting to think that before this summer, many poker fans actually weren’t too familiar with the name Ben Lamb. He will definitely be an interesting player to watch in the upcoming year as well, especially at the 2012 World Series of Poker.
