Brunson Awarded Exemption for Life by EPLFriday, December 16th, 2011 by Nadia
As the Epic Poker League (EPL) gears up for its third series of tournaments in its first season, the organizers of the tournament have decided to award Doyle Brunson, a legendary poker player, a lifetime player card. This card will give him entry into any EPL event even if he is unable to meet the usual requirements that are imposed upon players. The card is the first of its kind issued by the Epic Poker League.
Reactions to the Lifetime Award
Brunson stated that he felt honored by the lifetime player card. Nevertheless, he said that he felt that it was unnecessary. He went on to state that it was a nice feeling to be remembered for what he and other veteran poker players went through in order to bring poker to its current state. Brunson said that most people fail to realize the amount of adversity that the players faced in order to bring poker into the mainstream.
According to the Executive Chairman of Federated Sports and Gaming (FSG), Jeffrey Pollack, the reason why Doyle was awarded the lifetime exemption card is he has contributed a great deal to the development of the game, in addition to his own illustrious career at the tables. Pollack stated that the history of modern poker is the story of Doyle’s life and career.
Annie Duke, the Executive VP of FSG and who also holds the position of Commissioner at the Epic Poker League, said that Brunson has accomplished everything imaginable and is an extremely generous person. These characteristics are reflected in the work he has done for the poker community. His career longevity, combined with his successful role as a poker ambassador, has made him a legend in the poker world. Duke also stated that Doyle was also an easy person to like.
Brunson’s Career So Far
Over the course of his career, Doyle Brunson has won several major championship titles. This includes 10 World Series of Poker (WSOP) titles and bracelets. In recent years, he has stopped playing many tournaments. However, his winnings from 2008 onwards exceed the $300,000 mark.
Doyle is yet to participate in an event organized by the Epic Poker League. He has made it clear that despite being eligible for to participate anytime in his lifetime, he is willing to payout $20,000 each time the League hosts an event. Brunson said that the older he gets, the harder it is for him to see tournaments through. He also stated that it isn’t really worth it to him to undergo the grind of the tournament circuit and that he isn’t planning to play too many tournaments for the rest of his life Doyle went on to say that he now prefers cash games to tournaments.
