If you had asked me who would win the 2011 NBC National Heads-Up Championship I would have told you a few names that I expected to go deep including Phil Ivey, Tom Dwan, David Benyamine and Huck Seed. There is no way that I would have told you I thought Erik Seidel was going to win, but that’s exactly what happened. Seidel is one of the most accomplished poker pros in the history of the game and he’s been having one of the best years of poker in his life in 2011.

After winning the 2011 NBC National Heads-Up Championship, Erik Seidel pushed his 2011 earnings to over $4.3M and that’s only counting tournaments he’s played in. While most of us will never make over $100K from playing poker, Seidel has managed to already make over $4M in slightly over two months. This event is always one of the best of the year because many of the best poker players and celebrity poker players compete in the event.

There were a total of 64 players in the event including big names such as Phil Hellmuth, Mike Matusow, Jennifer Harman, Patrik Antonius, Doyle Brunson and Emmitt Smith. The final match of the 2011 NBC Heads-Up Championship was a best 2 out of 3 series between Erik Seidel and Chris Moneymaker. Both players need to go through tough competition in the earlier rounds of the event and neither had an easy road to the finals.

In the 1st round of the event Seidel beat Allen Cunningham while Moneymaker was able to defeat John Racener. The next round wasn’t any easier although Moneymaker was victorious against Daniel Cates and Seidel was able to beat Jennifer Harman. Erik needed to beat Phil Gordon in the 3rd round and was successful. Chris Moneymaker defeated Doyle Brunson in the 3rd round of the event in what was a very good heads-up battle.

It didn’t take long to get to the quarterfinals and there was definitely no lack of talent left in the event. Seidel, who is the spokesman for Full Tilt Poker, had a tough match against Vanessa Selbst in the quarterfinals, but still won and managed to move onto the semi-finals. Moneymaker won his quarterfinal match against David Oppenheim. With only one match left before the finals you could tell that the action was really beginning to spark up.

Moneymaker secured a spot in the championship match by defeating the famous Canadian, Jonathan Duhamel. Seidel had to go through Andrew Robl in the semi-finals before taking on Moneymaker. The championship match was a ton of fun to watch even though it only lasted two matches, as Seidel won the match 2-0.
