WSOPE 2011 ended with a €10,400 Main Event. The conclusion to the exciting series was topped off by Elio Fox’s victory at the main event. Fox was awarded a €1,400,000 cash prize for his victory.

The Lead Up to the Finals

The tournament began on the 15th of October with 310 players participating on Day 1(A). By Day 1(B), 283 players had entered the competition, raising the number of participants up to a record breaking 593. It was the largest WSOPE Main Event till date. The large number of players generated a cash prize of €5,692,800 and pay outs were made to the top 64 players. However, only eight players could make it to the final table. Once they were at the finals, they each had a shot at winning €3,890,000. Elio Fox was the leader of the pack by the time they reached this level.

The Final Table

Max Silver (UK) was eliminated first. While playing level 24, he came up against Chris Moorman (also from the UK). The blinds for this round were 15,000/30,000/5,000. Moorman and Silver battled it out fiercely but the match ended with Silver leaving the tournament at 8th place, with €115,000 in prize money.

Jake Cody, another UK player, came in at 7th place. Cody, who was a fan favorite, had just won his first WSOP bracelet in 2011 in the Las Vegas leg of the tournament. Cody came up against Fox in a match where the blinds were 25,000/50,000/5,000. Though it looked like Fox was falling behind, he soon repeated a move which he had used to eliminate two other players earlier in the competition (this was helped by his two pocket 10s). He came up with a straight which sent Cody packing with €150,000.

The next to be eliminated was Shawn Buchanan. He began the round with a short stack but managed to get back into the game. Buchanan went up against Dermot Blain and was eliminated after an Ac turned up on the river. Buchanan finished his WSOP Europe run with €200,000. Earlier in the series, he had finished 29th in the 6-Max No-Limit Hold’em event (buy in €2,500), 14th in the Pot-Limit Omaha event (€5,000) and 2nd at the Mixed No-Limit Hold’em (€10,000) event.

Dermot Blain came in at 5th place. He lost on the 147th hand while the blinds were at 40,000/80,000/10,000. He was beaten by Brian Roberts. Though the match went badly for Blain, he left the tournament with €275,000 as cash prize. Roberts was eliminated next, making him the winner of the 4th place. He won €400,000.

Moritz Kranich was Germany’s second player to get close to winning a WSOPE bracelet. He would have won the Poker Triple Crown if he had won the event. His victory streak ended with him at 3rd place, eliminated by Fox. He left the tournament with €550,000.

The Big Battle for the Title

The final battle for the title was between Elio Fox (USA) and Chris Moorman (UK). At the start of the match Elio took the lead, with 11,095 million chips to Moorman’s 6.72 million. The match ended with a turn card which was in Fox’s favour. Moorman finished with €800,000 in prize money.
