Hellmuth and Selbst Both Win at EPT LondThursday, October 10th, 2013 by Ryan
The European Poker Tour’s London Event is grabbing a good amount of attention, especially since it’s close to the upcoming November Nine, so fans of poker are getting ramped up about poker tournaments that are running all over currently. While we talked recently about Martin Finger and his big win at the £50k Super High Roller Event, and also talked about Robbie Bull bringing in a big win in his own right at the UKIPT Main Event, there are two big names who have brought in wins in the past week or so, and these two players are Phil Hellmuth and Vanessa Selbst. The two big named poker players brought in wins during preliminary events of the PokerSTars European Poker Tour London. The scores may not have been quite as bit as what we saw Finger and Bull bring in, but both of them are more than worth talking about.
Hellmuth’s event was the £2,000 Open Face Chinese Poker tournament, which is a game that has gotten more and more popular all over the world. Many poker fans and even players may not know the specifics of how to play this game, but it’s played in many casinos throughout the world as well, including many poker rooms in Las Vegas as well. For Selbst, she took down the £2,000 UKIPT High Roller No Limit Hold’em event for a very nice pay day herself. Selbst has been one of the most successful players in recent years, and of course the same could be said about Hellmuth.
The event that Selbst won featured 176 players buying in to the £2,000 UKIPT High Roller event, and this is a tournament that not only brings in many of the well-known players from the poker world, but it also brings in many local pros. With the UKIPT London series combining with the large EPT London series, we saw the poker stars out all over the place in this event. Selbst was definitely one of the most talked about when the tournament began, and that was for good reason. Selbst actually was coming off of a second place finish at the World Poker Tour’s Borgata Poker Open last month also.
For her win in this event, she had to beat some tough competition, but walked away as the winner and took home the first place pay day of £67,499. She now has more than $8 million in total career tournament winnings, which is good for 36th on the all-time money list, but is also ranked 1st out of all other women in the poker world. The final table featured the likes of Max Silver (2nd), Kenny Halleart (3rd), Joni Jouhkimainen (4th), Paul Edward Byrne (5th), Salvatore Bonavena (6th), Joe Kuether (7th), and Thomas Muhlocker (8th). Selbst and Silver actually cut a heads up deal, but Selbst was the winner and made around £8,000 more than her opponent.
For Hellmuths win, he hasn’t been nearly as hot recently as Selbst as, but this might be his turnaround time. Hellmuth hasn’t cashed for more than $54k in 2013 in an event, which was an 8th place finish during the World Series of Poker. He didn’t win any event either as you could have guessed, but this win was a nice monkey off of his back for 2013. The win was the Open Face Chinese game that was previously talked about, and while it was a small field, and he picked up only a pay day of £15,800, he has to be happy with the win. The field brought in a total of just 21 players, but it could get him going for the rest of 2013. In total he’s made nearly $18 million in career tournament earnings, which puts him 5th on the all time money list. For the final five of this tournament we saw Hannu Peltola get 2nd, Elior Benjamin Sion get 3rd, Paul Berende get 4th, and well-known Barry Greenstein get 5th.
The tournaments just keep rolling along, and while these were two very interesting ones to follow, we have even more action coming up in the final months of 2013 that we are going to have to talk about. Obviously this includes the November Nine, which will draw the most attention of any poker tournament.
