ESPN releases monthly poker rankings that are also known as ‘The Nuts’. 10 players in total are listed. The list does more than rank players based on their annual winnings and scores. It essentially ranks the 10 players who are performing the best currently and the list changes on a monthly basis. The rankings take into consideration online games, live games, cash games and poker tournaments – everything poker related.

How the Rankings are Decided

As can be expected, some well known names always feature in the poker rankings. However, some players who are featured aren’t as well known. The rankings for October 2011 had to take into consideration a lot of action that took place on the poker scene. There were some large tournaments to include in their deliberations – the EPT hosted two big events. The WSOP circuit events and WSOPE in France also took place in October.

ESPN Rankings for October 2011

The top four spots in ESPN’s rankings have not changed since September 2011, with Jason Mercier still holding on to 1st place, Erik Seidel closely following at 2nd. At 3rd and 4th places are Eugene Katchalov and Ben Lamb. Mercier maintained his position due to his three cash wins at WSOPE. He was also a part of the victorious Team Americas at the Caesars Cup 2011. Seidel followed with two cashes at the event. He too has had a great year. According to critics, he and Mercier are two of the best players currently in the poker world.

Shawn Buchanan surprises many by featuring on list

The real surprises were the rest of the players on the list. Previously unranked, Shawn Buchanan leaped into 5th place. He won four cashes out of the five events that he played at WSOPE. According to Lance Bradley, Buchanan has the potential to knock Mercier out of 1st place. Jake Cody moved up from 10th place to 7th. Bertrand Grospellier, after finishing at fifth place at WSOPE, is ranked at 6th place on the ESPN rankings.

Phil Hellmuth fell from 5th place to 8th place. Two new players were added to the list at 9th and 10th places. These players are Chris Moorman (9th place) and Sam Trickett (10th place). Moorman finished second at the WSOPE main event and Trickett was a final table contender at the same event. He also played at the EPT London final table. According to Daniel Negreanu, Trickett is one of the top 5 No Limit Hold’em players in tournaments as he is an excellent thinker.

Negreanu and Selbst among top players who did not make the list

A few top players in the poker circuit fell out of the rankings this week. They were Daniel Negreanu, Vanessa Selbst and John Juanda. Other players who were considered for the rankings were: Elio Fox, Sam Stein, Will Failla, Steve O’Dwyer, Matt Giannetti, Andy Frankenberger, Marvin Rettenmaier, Vanessa Rousso and Tom Dwan. However, they did not make it to ESPN’s list for October.
