While most poker news stories relate to the actual game itself, this one actually relates to something interesting that has come out in the “poker” world. This is the release of a new movie that features some big names called “Runner Runner”, the poker community has been very interested in seeing what this movie is all about. The premier for the movie has been set for October 4th, and it’ll be out in movie theaters across the United States.

Why is this new movie so interesting you ask? Well, obviously for starters it has to do with poker, but more importantly it has to do with online poker as well. To top it off, the movie is going to feature some big named actors such Ben Affleck, Justin Timberlake, and Gemma Arterton. The movie was originally slated to be released on September 27th, but things got pushed back a week. The idea behind the movie is that a student from Princeton, who is played by Timberlake, travels to Costa Rica in order to confront the owner of an online poker site that he plays on. The owner of the site is played by Ben Affleck, and the reason why Timberlake goes to visit him in the movie is because he loses his tuition in what seems to be a shady game on the online poker site.

Things change almost immediately when Timberlake meets up with Affleck, and he actually ends up working with the owner of the online poker site until he ends up getting approached by an FBI agent who is looking to bring down Affleck. It’s an interesting plot on paper, and should end up being a very good and entertaining movie, but we are still up in the air as to what role that Arterton is going to end up playing in the new movie.

It’s interesting because the movie isn’t being fully marketed or considered as a poker movie, but it is very focused on the game of online poker. The movie was written by the same two people who wrote Rounders in David Levien and Brian Koppelman, so you know that there is some very strong knowledge of the game of poker between those two names alone. While Koppelman has said that they are trying to get away from the specific type of movie, it seems that they just keep getting drawn back in towards it, and now more than almost any other time, it’s going to get a ton of interest from United States poker players.

Obviously the pair has done more than just Rounders though, as they were also writers for Ocean’s Thirteen, and a mini-series that was created by ESPN called Tilt back in 2005. They got a ton of attention for bringing the start to the poker boom when Rounders got rolling, but Tilt was an interesting spin on poker. With “Runner Runner” there’s a good chance that the two writers could end up getting back on the good side of poker players these days.

It looks as though this movie could end up being a major hit, at least if the early indictions and hype mean anything. The Facebook page for the movie has around 101,000 likes, and there are some major discussions going on behind the movie. Adding in the fact that it has big names like the three we previously mentioned helps out as well.

While there have been a few movies that didn’t catch any steam relating to the game of poker, we’ve also seen some documentaries that drew in interest. These include the likes of Bet Raise Fold: The Story of Online Poker, and also All In – The Poker Movie. They both got pretty good praise for their attention to detail and how they covered the game of online poker. There was also an ESPN documentary that got major praise for One of a Kind: The Rise and Fall of Stu Ungar, which looked at one of the bigger names in poker, and the three time winner of the World Series of Poker Championship Event, Stu Ungar.

Timberlake continues to rise in terms of showings in movies, including the likes of Alpha Dog, The Social Network, and Friends With Benefits. Affleck on the other side is incredibly popular in movies, and the two together should be fun to watch in this movie.
