Sam Trickett Attacked After 2nd Place Finish at One Drop TournamentThursday, July 5th, 2012 by Ryan
Sam Trickett has quickly become a household name in the world of poker, and when the Big One for One Drop poker tournament began at the 2012 World Series of Poker, everyone knew that he was a serious contender to take the down the title. While Trickett was unable to win the event, he finished as the runner up and took home an incredible pay day of $10.112 million for a run that featured him beating out 44 of the best players in the world of poker. Trickett was obviously incredibly excited about the finish, and was heading out to celebrate after his second place finish when things took a bad turn.
Late last night, Trickett tweeted that he was having a “great day until 6 guys did this to me.” Attached to the tweet was a picture of his face bruised and cut up. It was a picture that left many people shocked, and also showed that you apparently have to tread carefully as a professional poker player. Just a few months after a group broke into Main Event winner Jonathan Duhamel’s house and beat him up and robbed him, this is just another story that will be attached to the dangers of players after they win a big time tournament or bring in consistently strong results.
According to multiple reports (and a tweet from Trickett), he had gone out to celebrate after his big score with his girlfriend Natasha Sandhu and some other friends. During the celebration the six men not only attacked Trickett, but spat in his girlfriend’s face as well. It also seems that the fight may have stemmed from verbal harassment on his girlfriend, and that Trickett was defending her. He had apparently called her attackers “cowards”, which led to the fight. It has been stated that the money that Trickett won was NOT the cause of this attack, but many people are up in the air about whether it really was or not. It’s unknown if he had a large amount of money with him at the time, but you can assume that he wasn’t carrying any amount too massive around.
Fortunately, Trickett was only bruised and had a few cuts, and while he’s obviously upset about it, he will now focus on preparing for the World Series of Poker Championship Event which begins this weekend. Sandhu tweeted that “Sam is fine”, and that they were going to spend some time together. While we mentioned Duhamel above, there have also been other attacks on players including Carter Phillips, Kevin Stani, William Reynolds, and Kayvan Payman when Payman was pick pocketed back in 2010. Also Doyle Brunson has talked about robberies throughout his career, and of course Greg Raymer had to fight off two men in 2004 at Bellagio when they attempted to steal $150,000 in chips.
We’re glad to hear that Trickett wasn’t hurt too badly, and we are looking forward to seeing the strong player continue his run and potentially pull in some additional big results at this year’s final World Series of Poker events.
