After Black Friday, online poker in the United States has seemingly been an afterthought to most people. While big time players and professional poker players have made moves to locations that offer live poker rooms, or even to other countries in order to continue to play online poker; most players have just either stuck to playing for free and for fun, or not played at all. It was recently reported though, that the owner of the South Point Hotel, Casino, and Spa in Las Vegas, Michael Gaughan, has stated that he will launch an online poker site which will most likely be named after his casino. The site will be 100% free to play, and will be on the ZEN Entertainment Network.

This decision to open a free online poker room comes after the 2006 World Series of Poker Main Event Champion, Jamie Gold, decided to open his own free online room; called FreeGoldPoker.com. Free Gold Poker will run under the same ZEN Entertainment Network. One of the perks of these types of online poker rooms, is that they offer players real cash and different prizes, but there is no fee to play, and no monthly membership fee to be a part of the room. Essentially, you’ll find that these online poker rooms will make their money off of sponsorships and advertising.

Gaughan has been in the gaming business for a long time to say the least, as he started back in 1965 as the owner and casino manager of the El Cortez Hotel. He then decided to move on to a casino which he opened himself in 1972, called the Royal Inn Casino (now the Clarion Hotel and Casino). After he decided to sell the Royal Inn, he made a move onto another hotel and casino, when he founded Coast Casinos, INC; which began with its first property in the Barbary Coast Hotel. Gaughan has been a part of multiple different hotels and casinos, and ended up with the South Point Casino currently, which was originally called South Coast, before it changed names back in 2006. South Point Casino has had some time in the spotlight in recent years, and it was a host venue for both High Stakes Poker, and Poker After Dark recently.

While many people have been attempting to come up with new ideas for online poker sites that United States based players can play at, few have made the steps that Michael Gaughan and Jamie Gold have in the past few weeks. It will be interesting to see what type of attention that these two new US online poker rooms can draw. One would assume that these rooms won’t draw nearly as much traffic as true online poker rooms that are played with real money will; but it could grab many of the recreational online poker players.

There has currently been no opening date set for the South Point Casino’s online poker room, but we’ll keep you updated with any additional news on this interesting online poker sites status.
