Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic of WPT started last Friday with a total of 49 players. At the final table Kyle Julius faced stiff competition from Antonio Esfandiari who is the tournament’s defender champion and Soi Nguyen, the WSOP November Nine member.

Vanessa Selbst made an Excellent Start on Friday

Vanessa Selbst, who had been a leader-board constant in the tournament, made an excellent start on Friday. She cut a significant portion of chips from Jason Dewitt and eliminated Allen Cunningham from the game. After Cunningham’s elimination, Dewitt had a stack of 830,000 chips.

James Dempsey- One of the Best Performers of the Event

James Dempsey, who started playing with 300k chips, increased his stack significantly on the first day. Within the first half of the day, the player doubled the number of chips he initially started with. On a board of A-8-7-5-3, the pocket kings worked against Yuri Siniak and Dempsey increased his chip stack to 800k.

In the initial few hours of the tournament, Madison Bergeron, Jonathan Little, Matt Giannetti, Allen Kessler and Cunningham won about $15,922 each. Dwyte Pilgrim and Peter Jetten were eliminated in the 37th and 40th places respectively. With these eliminations, the final four tables of the field were reached on Friday.

Dempsey eliminated Javier Quinones on Friday. Quinones was at the 34th place when eliminated. With Quinones’ elimination, Dempsey’s chip stack increased to 1.35 million. Dempsey, along with Julius, Nguyen and Andrew Lichtenberger, continued to swap positions in the top 5 throughout Friday evening.

Action Heated up During Friday Evening

Dewitt was eliminated in the 28th place following the departures of David Pham and Dee Dozier. Only three tables were left after this. Both Julius and Nguyen had new rivals to fight against. Nguyen competed against Dempsey. Julius on the other hand, picked up Larry Wells. Esfandiari maintained the stack he started with, throughout the day. He picked up a competition with Lichtenberger in the later half of the day. Nicolas Fraioli was eliminated by Julius in an exciting hand.

Another noteworthy hand was presented in the evening through which Lichtenberger was pushed into contention. A bet was placed by Blake Kelso and Lichtenberger made a re-raise. Matt Marafioti made an all-in and Keno also chose to go all-in over the bets placed by Marafioti.

13 Players in Contention Till Saturday Noon

WPT Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic final table was determined by Saturday noon. Till then, as many as 13 players were in contention. These players include, Soi Nguyen, Andrew Lichtenberger, James Dempsey, Larry Wells, Antonio Esfandiari, Kyle Julius, Vitor Coelho, Anthony Yeh, Vanessa Selbst, Braden Hall, David Williams, William Reynolds and Rudy Maarek.

Previous WPT champions to reach the final table of this year’s WPT included Williams, and Esfandiari. Esfandiari aimed at creating a record by getting the second WPT championship. Selbst is the only woman to reach the final table and played marvelously throughout the event. Lichtenberger, Dempsey and Nguyen handled the challenges well.
